TSRA will be hosting a Winter Paddling Clinic on October 14, 2023.

Many paddlers and fishing kayakers enjoy our lakes, flat water, and whitewater rivers every year during the warm Tennessee days. But what about paddling in the cooler days of spring and fall and even winter? Winter paddling offers several advantages, including the opportunity to experience solitude on the river and the ability to view wildlife and other river features more easily that are often blocked by heavy vegetation during the summer. It is very important to be prepared with the skills and the proper equipment to face a trip on the water during these cold months. Whether you are an occasional recreational paddler, fishing kayaker or adventurous whitewater paddler, join us and our ACA certified safety and paddle instructors at TWRA’s Buffalo Ridge Refuge of Humphreys County to prepare to extend your paddling experiences all year long.

A few hours will be spent in a classroom setting, then we will get on the river to experience different scenarios such as building a shelter, lighting a fire and treating someone with hypothermia.

The clinic will still be held even if there are unsafe river conditions or inclimate weather. We will still practice different scenarios without getting on the river.

Students can come to Buffalo Ridge Refuge Friday evening anytime after 5pm and can campout on the property. Bathhouses, with showers, covered pavilion and fire ring are available. There is a possibility that we will stay over Saturday night and paddle Sunday. More information about a Sunday paddle will be addressed to those that register closer to the event.

Student requirement: Canoe or Kayak, paddle gear. A complete list of gear, supplies, clothing, snacks will be emailed out to all who register.
