Intro to Rivers will introduce participants to the paddling skills and safety considerations necessary for safely navigating Class I rivers common to Middle Tennessee recreational boaters.

In this 8 hr class, you will be introduced to essentials of river kayaking. Following classroom discussions of river features, safety considerations and equipment, the class will move to the water to develop key skills including basic strokes, maneuvers, self and assisted rescue and river/current reading in a moving water (up to Class 1) environment. You can review a course outline here.

This should NOT be your first time in a boat on the water. Taking an introduction to kayaking course is recommended. This course is designed for adults and children 12 and older.

There must be a parent or guardian present with each child under the age of 15 at all times, unless otherwise agreed upon through conversation with instructor.

You must provide your own kayak and equipment! Students who don't own a kayak will need to reserve and pay for their own kayak rental. Onsite rentals are available through Pinewood Canoe and Camp and can be arranged by calling the number below. Class fees do not include rental fees nor river access and shuttle fees ($10.00 in 2019). Those fees must be paid by each individual on site the day of the class.

If you have questions about this class or about boats or other equipment, please contact Mike Tossing.

You will be responsible for arranging and returning rental kayaks and gear to Pinewood.
